Singing was one of the responsibilities of the cowboy. The singing soothed the cattle and distracted them from sudden noises, causing a stampede. One of the best known cowboy ballads can also be found listed as the Cowboy's Lament or The Dying Cowboy. Based on a poem by Universalist clergyman, Edwin Hubbel Chapmin, as The Ocean Buried, a sea ballad from 1839, music attributed to George Allen. Often sung to the old tune, Hind Horne.
