Relay Races - Lines and Spaces - 1st Grade
Students race to the board drawing whole notes around the lines and in the spaces of the staff. 

If you are not familiar with the relay races, please see
RELAY RACES.


Divide Class into two teams. 
Put names of teams on the board (See Math Ties).
  1. Today's relay race is drawing whole notes around the staff lines and then in the staff spaces. (show example)  First we will draw whole notes around the lines skipping up and down the staff.

  2. To help us out, for the first race I have put an 'x' over the lines as they skip up and down.  You will need to draw a whole note around the 'x' over the next line up or down.

    For kindergarten, mainstreamed, or basic skills:

    Showing the kindergarten students where to draw their note.

    Draw a very small 'x' over the line or in the space. The student draws a whole note around the 'x.'


  3. Hold out your hand.  Tag yourself and say "next line," (next space)  Now when you tag the next person, say "next line."  Play game and give point to winning team (half - 1/2).

  4. Okay, let's check them.  As I point to the whole notes, you say "next line up" or "next line down."  If it isn't right you say, "too big" or "missed the line."  Team with most number correct receives a point.

  5. Okay, let's check them.  As I point to the whole notes, you say "next space up" or "next space down."  If it isn't right you say, "out of the space" or "missed the space." Team with most number correct receives a point.
